Record 38 Cougars Earn Spot on CCAA Fall Academic Honor Roll
1/25/2021 | Academics
CHICO, Calif. – Cal State San Marcos Athletics put a department record 38 student-athletes on the 2020 CCAA Fall Academic Honor Roll, the conference announced on Monday.

Previously named the Fall All-Academic Team, Honor Roll distinction is given to student-athletes who are a sophomore in academic standing with a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.3. The standard requirement of competing in a conference-sponsored sport has been waived for 2020-21, as honorees must be a member of their team in good standing.

A total of 478 men and women from across the CCAA’s 12 member institutions have been honored for their efforts in the classroom for the fall of 2020, shattering the previous best by 127.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our student-athletes,” exclaimed CCAA commissioner Mitch Cox. “Despite the disappointment and frustration they have all felt, they were able to channel their energies to their academic pursuits and really knock it out of the park. This is a testament to their commitment and to the great job their coaches have done in helping them maintain their focus on their classes.”

Of the 38 Cougars to earn the honor, 11 were repeat winners. Yesenia Betancourt, Katie Connor and Nicole Diggs each earned the award for the third time.

Only 14 CCAA student-athletes kept a perfect 4.0 GPA, including volleyball’s Kayla de los Reyes and women’s cross country’s Makayla Jones.

CSUSM also had 18 student-athletes with a 3.8 GPA or higher – the most in the CCAA.

The CCAA recognizes individuals academically per season – fall, winter and spring – for all CCAA sponsored sports. The CCAA Fall Academic Honor Roll consists of eligible student-athletes who compete in the sports of men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball. The Winter Academic Honor Roll will honor men’s and women’s basketball players, with the Spring Academic Honor Roll consisting of student-athletes from men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s track and field, softball and baseball. The remainder of the seasonal academic selections will be announced at the conclusion of the spring term after grades are finalized.
