There are often community members who rise to the top – clearly reflecting the San Marcos ‘Spirit of Service.’ That’s why San Marcos City Council members have initiated a new recognition program called the San Marcos Civic SMILE Award.
Six times each year, a community member will be chosen by a specific City Council member to receive recognition and will be presented with a San Marcos Inspiration, Leadership and Excellence (SMILE) Award during a City Council meeting.
The first recipient was announced at yesterday’s City Council meeting and was chosen by Mayor Rebecca Jones. She awarded this first Civic SMILE recognition to all City of San Marcos Staff. The honor of selecting a San Marcos Civic SMILE Award recipient will then transition to City Council members Randy Walton, Maria Nuñez, Sharon Jenkins and Ed Musgrove throughout the year.
“The San Marcos City Council is thrilled to announce this wonderful opportunity to highlight a community member who we feel is a true pinnacle of San Marcos,” said Mayor Rebecca Jones.
“Our community is filled with innovative thinkers who fuse creativity with a can-do spirit to discover what is possible. This is a chance for us to recognize those stars among us and commend them for the light they shine on our community.”

Mayor Jones was thrilled to announce that the first SMILE award would recognize the 200+ San Marcos City staff members.
“Our entire staff has shown tremendous resilience and flexibility in extremely difficult circumstances as they were deemed essential employees,” Jones said. “Pivoting from working in offices to home in many cases, I’m so proud of the top notch service they have continued to deliver, keeping a high quality of life for the San Marcos community as their top priority. I’m proud that even with a very different working environment, our community hasn’t seen any interruption in the service that we have all come to value and expect. The commitment to San Marcos by our City staff members is unparalleled and for these reasons I am honored to recognize each staff member for their exemplary service to San Marcos residents.”
