Vistans Rising to the Challenge: Roz and Sandy

Vista City News
Kudos to the Vista residents who are making facial masks for healthcare facilities close to home and far away. In March, residents Roz Lehman and Sandy Shay rose to the challenge and began sewing masks in their respective homes.

“I heard the need for masks and called Dr. John LaFata’s office in Vista and gave him my first 20,” said Roz Lehman. “Then, I heard from a friend with an anesthesiologist’s office in Washington state and sent some to them. From there, I made more: for a Salt Lake City cancer treatment center, a Murrieta charge nurse and her team, and some for at-risk friends and family.”

To date, Roz has made 296 masks with 120 of those for Pacifica Senior Living (Wendy Henderson contributed 30 of those masks) and more for UCSD’s pharmacy, and a senior care facility in Fallbrook. Initially, Roz made 10 masks a day; however, with the need growing, she is now producing 20 to 25 masks every day spending an estimated 10 hours a day at her sewing machine.

Sandy Shay also heard about the need for masks, and since March has made and distributed 110 masks. She is currently working on 50 more. Sandy’s masks have been sent to Tri-City Medical Center, Cypress Court Assisted Living Facility, a Colorado surgeon (including scrub caps she made), pharmacists in a local Vons store, and masks for her friends and family.

Roz and Sandy are just two Vistans who have risen to the challenge and are giving back to the community from their homes during the Stay Home order.

Look for other Vista profiles of those contributing to the mask effort next week. If you have made masks or contributed in some other way, use the hashtag #vistacares on social media.

If you are interested in making masks at home

Thank you, to all Vistans, for rising to the challenge and responding to the need during this unprecedented time!
