Since 1971, Congress has combined Lincoln’s Birthday and Washington’s Birthday into one long weekend celebrated on the third Monday in February, February 16th this year, and called President’s Day, honoring all those who have served as President of the United States. This federal holiday is an official state holiday in most states under various names. Schools and all federal agencies are closed, and most banks are closed. This year, Lincoln’s Birthday is Thursday, February 12th, and Washington’s Birthday is Saturday, February 22nd, not federal holidays. Many school districts now take a week off in February around the start of President’s Day, and some offer a three- or four-day weekend. Parents will need to check with their individual schools to see what their district does for this holiday.
Historically, the holiday was observed to honor George Washington, beginning in 1879, and later Abraham Lincoln. Today, the day is to honor all who served as our nation’s Commander in Chief. Various celebrations, parades, and other activities take place, especially in Washington, D.C. If you happen to be in Virginia on President’s Day, you can visit Mount Vernon free of charge, the former home of George Washington. There is one food you could enjoy on this day that is associated with President’s Day – have a slice of cherry pie, the traditional dessert for the holiday.
Happy President’s Day, Monday, February 16th, and enjoy your day off or whenever your holiday takes place!
