Women’s Basketball CSUSM Claims 76-59 Win Over Stan State on Senior Day

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The RV Cal State San Marcos women’s basketball team (17-4, 14-2 CCAA) led wire-to-wire in its 76-59 victory over Stanislaus State on Saturday afternoon in The Sports Center.

Prior to the game, CSUSM honored its four seniors, Katie FitzGerald, Natalie Nicolosi, Mina Tameilau and Jordan Vasquez.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cougars concluded the first quarter with a 21-15 lead after shooting 63.6% (7-of-11) from the field, 75% (3-of-4) from behind the arc and 100% (4-of-4) from the charity stripe.
A fast break that resulted in some fancy footwork by Ranson for the layup made it 25-18 CSUSM.
The CSUSM defense held the Warriors to just two field goals the entire second quarter on two made 3-pointers from Liliana Marques and Mya Blake.
Leading 37-27 at the half, the Cougars shot 48.1% (13-of-27) while holding Stan State to 23.3% (7-of-30).
Ranson led all scorers in the first half with 12 points.
On the offensive boards, Vasquez pulled down her 20th rebound of the game at the 1:42 mark of the third quarter.

FAST BREAK
With Chico State’s loss to Cal State San Bernardino, the Cougars move to a three-game lead for first place in the CCAA standings over the second-place Wildcats.
The win makes CSUSM the first team to earn a spot in the 2024 CCAA Tournament with five games remaining.
CSUSM shot 47.5% (29-of-61) from the field to Stan State’s 26.2% (16-of-61).
Vasquez collected her 14th double-double of the season (27 pts, 21 reb.) and the 40th of her collegiate career.
Vasquez finished the game with 21 rebounds, setting a CSUSM single-game record and passing Heather Thompson’s record of 20 set against Simpson on Dec. 14, 2013.
The Cougars outrebounded the Warriors, 51-35.
CSUSM tallied 19 assists to Stan State’s five.
The Cougars got 38 points in the paint to the Warriors’ 18.

UP NEXT
The Cougars will begin their final five-game road trip next week, traveling to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. game.
