The public input is important
We all know how important it is to keep our downtown vibrant, accessible, and welcoming—for residents, visitors, and local businesses alike. One of the biggest challenges our community currently faces is parking availability in the heart of downtown. As our city continues to grow and attract more people, it has become increasingly difficult to find convenient parking, which affects everything from shopping and dining to overall quality of life.
In response to this challenge, the City is exploring a solution that could significantly improve parking capacity: converting Main Street and part of Broadway from a two-way street to a one-way street. Watch Video. While change is never easy, this small shift could create up to 60 additional parking spaces—right where they’re needed most.
We want to be clear about why this matters:
Why a One-Way Conversion?
More Parking Where It Counts: Up to 60 new spaces means more opportunities for customers to park near local shops, for residents to run quick errands, and for guests to enjoy downtown events without circling the block.
Improved Traffic Flow: One-way streets can reduce congestion and confusion at intersections. They often lead to smoother, safer travel through downtown corridors.
Safer for Pedestrians and Cyclists: Narrowing the roadway and reducing traffic directions creates more predictability for drivers and more space for safer crosswalks, bike lanes, or sidewalks.
Support for Local Business: When parking is easier to find, customers are more likely to stop and spend time downtown. This has a direct and positive impact on our local economy.
We Understand Change Takes Time
We recognize that any change to the way people move through our city requires thoughtful planning and community input. This is not just about traffic—it’s about preserving the charm, convenience, and vitality of our Historic downtown for years to come. That’s why we’re approaching this process with care, transparency, and a commitment to hearing your voice.
Next Steps
Monday, June 23, at the Civic Center (in the Community Room) at 6:00 PM.
We’ll be inviting community members to public meetings and listening sessions where you can share feedback, ask questions, and see visual examples of how the new layout would work. Your input will help shape this decision and ensure it reflects the best interest of the whole community.
Thank you for caring about our city and being open to ideas that support its future. We look forward to partnering with you as we work to make downtown more accessible, functional, and enjoyable for everyone.
