The Oceanside Public Library, in partnership with the North County African American Women’s Association, invites the public to join us for a special Art in Conversation online event celebrating “History of Black Music and Dance: Past, Present, and Future” on Saturday, February 27, at 11:00 a.m. Performance pieces by locally-based artists Alyssa Junious and BJ Robinson will highlight black artists who have influenced their work. The artists will also premier a new collaborative work inspired by the writings of Langston Hughes. The event will be interactive and is open to adults and teens.
Alyssa Junious (she, her, siya). Alyssa is a San Diego based arts and wellness advocate and founder of Continuum Arts Project. She received her B.F.A in Performance and Choreography from the University of California, Irvine. She believes that art is a learned skill that can help us to explore, investigate, and heal collectively. As a socially conscious artist, she is dedicated to creating work that serves to initiate conversation. BJ Robinson (he, him, his). BJ has worked in musical direction, education, composition, and performance throughout San Diego County. BJ also hosts KPBS Arts, a weekly TV program about arts & culture on KPBS; and Tough Talk, a bi-weekly virtual discussion series that focuses on “getting comfortable with the uncomfortable” challenges in daily life.
This event will close out Black History Month, inspiring the community to learn more about how art has been and can be used as an act of resistance and collective healing.
