(Carlsbad, CA) – Dr. Melanie Burkholder, the Republican candidate for State Assembly District 76, today issued a debate challenge to incumbent liberal Democrat Assemblywoman Tasha Boerner Horvath.

As the only Republican candidate in the race, Burkholder seeks to debate Boerner Horvath to allow voters to hear directly from the two candidates about their divergent views on how to best serve the 76th District.

“I challenge Assemblywoman Tasha Boerner Horvath to a series of debates to discuss issues that are important to our community,” said Burkholder. “It is clear that Asm. Boerner Horvath’s approach to governing is wrong for our district, and her record of voting with liberal special interests to restrict our freedoms and support endless tax-and-spend policies speaks for itself. However, I do believe it is important to provide a forum for the voters of the 76th District to hear from the candidates and decide for themselves who they want to represent them in Sacramento.”

Burkholder has been endorsed by the San Diego County Republican Party, San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond, founder of Reform California Carl DeMaio, San Diego County Assessor Ernie Dronenburg, and many other elected and community leaders.

The 76th encompasses coastal North County, including Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and the cities of Carlsbad, Encinitas, Oceanside, and Vista. The district is currently occupied by liberal Democrat Tasha Boerner Horvath, who won election in 2018. Boerner Horvath is the first Democrat to win this seat since redistricting in 2012. The District’s voter registration is nearly evenly split between Republicans, Democrats, and Independents.

Dr. Melanie Burkholder is a decorated Secret Service agent, mental health counselor, and proud wife and mother. A Republican, Melanie will take the same fight to Sacramento special interests and ultra-liberal politicians that she took to our nation’s criminals while serving in the Secret Service.
