SAN MARCOS — The national championship series was so close, but the California State University San Marcos softball team fell short on Sunday.
The fourth-seeded Cougars (57-12) battled, yet it was No. 6 McKendree prevailing in a gripping 4-3 win in the NCAA Division II national semifinal in Chattanooga, Tenn., at the Women’s College World Series. McKendree advanced to the best-of-three national championship series against No. 1 Saint Leo, which starts today and ends on Wednesday.
CSUSM’s two losses in the double-elimination tournament were by a combined three runs in two heartbreaking losses. The Cougars, though, won in thrilling fashion to open the tournament, and then blew out North Georgia, 7-1, in CSUSM’s first elimination game on Saturday.
