Something Rotten! WOW!!! What a show!

By Koko McDowell
WOW!!! What a show! Something Rotten! is definitely something else… I have to admit, my family and I did not know what to expect from this show. But, from the moment the first actor stepped on the stage all the way through to the end of the show, we were cracking up, all pun intended. So let me break it down in sections:

Cast: As expected, the singing was exceptional, and the costumes were great. Some costumes invoked laughter at first sight, while the over exaggeration of masculinity solidified this was an adult comedy by far. I really loved the diversity of the cast members, which I noticed from the very beginning. Each cast member held their own and executed their roles flawlessly.

Stage & Set: Moonlight Amphitheatre always does an amazing job with their production sets and use of the entire stage and this show is no different. The high quality and level of detail for each scene was exceptional. The transitions were seamless and allowed me to stay drawn into each scene.

Performance: This professional cast did an amazing job! I loved how they were able to incorporate their various talents throughout the play. From their vocal artistry to the click of their taps, the performances were exciting, high energy, and elicited a standing ovation at the end. Some scenes were so grand and entertaining, the amphitheater erupted in applauds. My favor part of this musical is how the writer weaved other familiar musicals into it. People literally yelled out the names of the productions as they were identified. The sense of being able to identify certain songs and name references was rewarding and triggered crowed participation, which added to the energy and excitement from the audience. Also, I loved the live orchestra in the belly of the stage, not sure what the proper name is but when you see it, you will get it.

Messages: I love that this musical had an overarching plot, but it was layered with subplots. It is true skill when a production is able to draw you in, hook you with laughter, then send you on your way with multiple moral lessons…. Which you will have to go see it to know it… Just know this, we identified at least five lessons that society struggled with during the Renaissance ages and we still struggle with today. I guess nothing has changed but the date, what a show!

This production is great for an adult date night or just hanging out with friends. Be prepared to laugh from beginning to end.
