CARLSBAD — United Airlines made its return to McClellan-Palomar Airport on Monday, nearly 11 years after the airline ceased operations in 2015.

United is operating four daily flights — two each to Denver and San Francisco — and joins American Airlines to service Palomar airport. Additionally, American will expand its operations at Palomar as the airline will add two more daily flights to Phoenix, according to county records.

Flyers will now have two major carriers operating out of Carlsbad, in addition to JSX, a public charter service. United previously operated out of Carlsbad from 1998 to 2015 when it ended regional turboprop service following the retirement of its Embraer 120 airplane.

“With thousands of possible itineraries offered throughout United’s domestic and international long-haul network in San Francisco and Denver, Carlsbad gets a vital plug into the global commercial aviation system — further deepening United’s interconnectivity with smaller domestic cities,” United spokesperson Remy Zeigler said. “Customer demand is on par with where we anticipated it would be. This is the first time United has served Carlsbad from San Francisco.”
