CHICO, Calif. – Cal State San Marcos Athletics led the way with a school-record 145 student-athletes on the CCAA All-Academic Team, the conference released on Tuesday.

“No obstacle is too large for our student-athletes, and their determination to excel academically,” CSUSM Director of Athletics Jennifer Milo said.

“CSUSM student-athletes are the epitome of excellence through resiliency. We are setting the standard and raising the bar in the CCAA, and I couldn’t be more proud of what our student-athletes stand for.”

Introduced in the 2005-06 season, this year’s All-Academic Award recognizes undergraduate student-athletes who were on a roster in good standing in a Conference-sponsored sport and earned a varsity letter during the academic year while also achieving a 3.40 grade-point average or higher during the 2020-21 school year.

CSUSM broke a school record for the second consecutive year as the Cougars tallied 126 on the 2019-20 All-Academic Team.

“What an amazing accomplishment for our student-athletes,” CSUSM Faculty Athletic Representative Dr. Bennett Cherry said. “The word unprecedented has been used extensively in the past year and a half to describe the times in which we live, but these results earned by our diligent student-athletes are just that… unprecedented results as they shattered our school record! While all the credit goes to our student-athletes for putting forth effort and demonstrating learning in their courses, I think it’s important to also acknowledge the role of our coaches and administrators who worked hand-in-hand to deliver on our CRS team commitment: Care, Resources, and Support for our student-athletes. Our student-athletes have demonstrated a resolute focus on achieving top grades despite the obstacles and challenges of learning remotely during the past academic year. I look forward to continuing to cheer on these student-athletes as they return to campus and begin training and competing with their teammates. We are all so proud of them for pushing through and learning well.”

Since joining the league in the 2015-16 academic year, CSUSM has tallied the most CCAA All-Academic honorees with a combined total of 600.

The conference as a whole also set a record with 1,171 student-athletes being named to the CCAA All-Academic Team.

“CCAA student-athletes had to fight through so many challenges in 2020-21 including no conference athletic competition, little to no in-person instruction and all of the rest of the mental and physical issues that COVID brought,” reflected CCAA commissioner Mitch Cox. “To see a new high in the number of all-academic honorees despite having one less school in the conference is beyond gratifying. The student-athletes should be extremely proud of themselves and an enormous amount of credit goes to the faculty, coaches and staff that helped keep them focused on their studies.”
