Motor Officers Make Strong Showing in Local Training and Competition
Congratulations to Motor Officers Tyler Herrmann, Paul Smyth and Pete McCollough for strong showings during the Terry Bennett Memorial Police Training and Competition in Oceanside.

The officers competed in several events and had very strong showings, including a third-place finish in the two-man competition, and fourth place finishes in the tethered category, slow course and the four-man category (ridden with a Coronado officer.)

The 21st annual event provided invaluable training for your motor officers.

Escondido Narcotics Detective Awarded “Al Stewart” Award Special Investigations Unit Detective Steve Brown was awarded the California Narcotic’s Officer Association “Al Stewart” award for his outstanding enforcement and investigative ability. His dedication, duty and commitment to the community is evidenced by him being a model employee for the City of Escondido and a truly hard-working officer. He is passionate about putting criminals in jail and making Escondido a safer community. Over the last year, he has been directly or indirectly involved in the seizure or purchase of over 143.8 pounds of methamphetamine,
12.6 grams of heroin, 2.4 pounds of cocaine, 9.6 pounds of fentanyl, 12.2 pounds of mushrooms, 13 firearms and $170,500 cash. Aside from all that great work, Detective Brown devotes his free time to supporting his own children in their sports endeavors and helping the officers at the police department stay healthy by assisting in the design of a gym.

Congratulations Detective Brown. Well deserved!

PAL hosts Rugby Camp
PAL hosted an outstanding Rugby clinic this weekend. The San Diego Legion brought out five players, their head coach, a film crew and many props (in addition to equipment, stickers and t- shirts). The Spartan Youth Rugby League also brought out coaches and PAL had four coaches to help.

41 children attended the clinic, and a fun time was had by all. It was a hot day and everyone stayed well hydrated. Two officers brought out their children and an EPD K9 handler came out with his partner to say hi to the kids. The children were impressed and asked him a lot of good questions.

Several school officials were at the camp as well. In the words of retired Fire Captain Bill Atkins, who now coaches with the Spartan Youth League: “First, thank you for everyone’s work in
organizing Saturday’s clinic. Al Owens and the PAL took the initial steps toward introducing the game and culture of rugby to the youth of Escondido…Next, there is inspiration to continue the introduction of rugby into the Escondido schools. Most notable is this inspiration is rooted in the values rugby holds true. The very values each of the aforementioned organizations demonstrates and teaches. A simple youth rugby clinic has become a springboard for something greater.”
